The autumn chill was biting as we made our way towards the parking area where the fortune teller’s camper was located. The Halloween festival had left the air tinged with a mix of excitement and something more enigmatic.

“Are you sure this is the right place?” Bailey whispered as we approached the brightly painted camper adorned with symbols and stars.

Abby nodded, phone in hand. “According to Mark Jacob, she’s been staying here since the festival started.”

I rapped on the door, half-expecting it to creak open like in a horror movie. Instead, a man’s voice called out, “Just a minute!”

The door swung open, revealing not the mystical fortune-teller we had expected but a middle-aged man in casual attire. His eyes were sharp but not unkind.

“Can I help you ladies?” he asked.

“We were looking for the fortune teller from the festival,” Abby started, clearly taken aback.

“That would be me,” he said with a chuckle. “The name’s Tom, Tom Harrison. The fortune teller get-up is just part of the show.”

Bailey exchanged a glance with me. “We wanted to ask about Montgomery Price. We heard he visited your booth.”

Tom’s demeanor shifted slightly, a shadow passing over his face. “Ah, Mr. Price. Yes, he did come by. Look, why don’t you come in? It’s rather chilly out here.”

Inside the camper, we found ourselves amidst an array of tarot cards, crystal balls, and other paraphernalia. It was like stepping into another world.

“So, you’re a true mystic?” I couldn’t help but ask.

Tom smirked. “Let’s just say I have an understanding of people and their desires. The cards are more about insight than magic.”

He settled down at a small table and gestured for us to sit. “Now, about Mr. Price …”

“He seemed upset when he left your tent,” Abby said. “Can you tell us why?”

Tom sighed, picking up a tarot deck and shuffling it absentmindedly. “Mr. Price was a man grappling with his own demons. He asked for a reading about his future, about his career in particular.”

“And?” Bailey prompted.

“The cards weren’t kind,” Tom admitted. “I saw struggle, disappointment … a downfall. He didn’t take it well. Accused me of being a fraud.”

“Did he say anything else? Anything that might help us understand what happened to him?” I pressed.

Tom paused, his eyes lingering on the cards. “He mentioned being at the end of his rope and said he needed something big to save his career. He left in a rage, cursing and swearing.”

A silence fell over the camper. The man’s words painted a picture of Price that was both tragic and troubling.

“Do you believe in curses, Mr. Harrison?” Abby asked suddenly.

Tom raised an eyebrow. “I believe in the power of belief. If a man believes he’s cursed, it can destroy him just as surely as any magic.”

“Have you ever had any previous interaction with Price before last evening?” I asked.

Tom paused for a moment, his eyes narrowing as if sifting through a myriad of memories. Then, he leaned back, crossing his arms.

“No, not directly. But I was aware of Mr.
